Middle Grade

Every family has secrets, but in Mysti’s family there’s the secret they don’t even speak about  to each other: Mysti’s mother never leaves the house. Never. It’s called agoraphobia. The family has found ways to compensate – that is, until a disabling accident puts her father in the hospital. At age 12, smart as she is, can Mysti take charge of herself, her little sister, and their mother? And all this while her only friend is distancing himself from her and tormenting her in an effort to be seen as a hipster? Mysti is an engaging, quirky, admirable, very real young woman, and in a refreshing change this middle-grade novel features some well-meaning, competent, and helpful adults.

Description

Twelve-year-old Mysti Murphy wishes she were a character in a book. If her life were fictional, she'd magically know how to deal with the fact that her best friend, Anibal Gomez, has abandoned her in favor of being a "hipster." She'd be able to take care of everyone when her dad has to spend time in the hospital. And she'd certainly be able to change her family's secret.

Seventh grade is not turning out the way Mysti had planned. With the help of a hot-hair balloon, her new friend Rama Khan--and maybe even the heroes of the Texas Revolution--can she find the courage to change?
