Nature's quiet conversations, john weeks John Weeks, author of Nature's Quiet Conversations (Syracuse University Press)

Booksigning and discussion with the renowned Central New York naturalist

Weeks is widely recognized as a biologist, botanist, environmental educator, artist, author and commentator. His weekly radio essays have been heard for twenty-four years on the region's public radio station, WRVO.

Central New York yields some of the most outstanding natural areas in the state, from the Finger Lakes to the Adirondacks; its locales have offered an eclectic haven for environmentalists and scientists for decades. In this book, Weeks not only provides personal reminiscences but a comprehensive view of the region and the distinctive environmental conditions and features that have marked and altered the landscape from pre-WWII to the present.

Rebekkah's Journey - A World War II Refugee Story

Written by Ann E. Burg; Illustrated by Joel Iskowitz

(Sleeping Bear Press)

In 1944 a vacant army base in Oswego, New York became the temporary home of over 900 men, women and children who had fled Europe towards the end of World War II. With little more than the clothing on their backs, Rebekkah and her mother are just two of the many refugees who come to live in the camp. Adjusting to a strange new world and a new language, Rebekkah puts aside her own fears to try and recreate tiny bits of home for her mother. A fictional story based on the real-life experiences of surviving refugees, Rebekkah's Journey shares the illuminating story of one refugee's arrival on America's shores.

Reading & booksigning of her new release Imperial Valley Nisei women: Transcending Poston

Imperial Valley Nisei Women centers on the oral histories of second generation Japanese American women from Imperial Valley, California who were interned at Poston 1, Arizona during World War II. Inspiring stories of five remarkable women document their courage and determination in confronting physical and emotional hardships, racial and gender discrimination, language barriers and wartime “concentration camps” in the United States, not to be confused with the death camps in Europe in WW II. Resettlement after camp meant extreme losses of property and finances.

Mabel Kawashima Ota, Mary Shigematsu Hoshizaki, Mary Mitamura Sanbonmatsu, Yoshiko Mitamura Kodama and Ruri Tsuchiya Ishimaru tell abut their lives before camp, how they transcended Poston and moved on in their lives giving us all messages for future generations.

An Evening for (Book) Lovers - Celebrating and Sharing Their Passion

Love may come and love may go, but you can depend on a love of books to be eternal. That simple and glorious fact will be celebrated Tuesday, February 14, at the river’s end bookstore.

The public is invited to join an assembly of unashamed, self-proclaimed  booklovers at 6:00 P.M. Readers will include Mark Cole, Richard Zakin, John Sheffield, Heidi Conland, Winfield Ihlow, Bill Reilly, and Jackie Lalande, Mark Mazzoli, and Banna Rubinow. As in previous years, readers have selected the poems, stories, or essays they’ll be presenting.

“Love is indeed a many-splendored thing,” said Bill Reilly, owner of the river’s end bookstore, “but we all know that it can be problematic at times. The love of books is never unrequited. A book will never betray you, hog the covers, use your razor, or forget your anniversary.”

“Seriously, this community has an amazing number of passionate booklovers,” he added. “We really enjoy hosting an event that enables them to socialize with like-minded folks and listen to other booklovers reading aloud selections on love.”

Refreshments will be served!
